Well i'm a fan of north london. Personally I'd go for Islington - it'd be the top end of your budget but easy for work (walkable to St Pauls if you're near Angel). There's a fair bit to do locally and it's not quite as insular as Clapham. Failing that, you could go a couple of stops further up the Northern Line to Finchley. You'd get more for your money, and good place to bring up kids too... not that i have any, but if i did i'd look at it.

With a young family, why not move out to the countryside. A place like Harpenden has lots of greenery around it, and is only 30 mins or so, to the City. Trains are frequent, and youll usually get a seat.Rent of about £1k will get you a decent 2 or 3 bed house, but the train will be expensive at £300 pcm or so

Thats about the first sensible suggestion so far. To get a family place for btwn £800 and £1200 a month you have no chance in the areas suggested. you will have to move further out. For example Kingston is zone 6 and £1100 a month gets you a 2 bed flat. try further south like woking with high speed trains and you get a small house for that.Clapham islington canary wharf. these are not really child friendly places and certainly not in your budget
