Hi, Here is some context: • I was interviewing for 2 different roles about 3 months ago A & B, with A being my preference• 1 month into the interview process, role A kind of stalled for a couple of internal reasons (which I didn’t know at the time) and in the meantime I got and took role B• Having been in role B for 2 months, employer A came back and asked for a final interview which I went to as didn't think it could do any harm• During the interview, they thought I was still at my old employer and for some crazy reason I didn't correct them and let them know I started role B - dumb, I know...• Now employer A have come back and want to make me an offerI am quite happy in role B, but role A is what you could call a dream job. Understand this isn’t the most ethical thing to do, but is there any way I can get the around the dumb error of not being clear on my current circumstances if I wanted to go for role A? I think there is no way this would not be flagged in the background screening. Or would it be better to just let it slide, avoid the hassle and take it as a lesson learnt? Thanks!

If you want to make the move, just fess up. It does depend a little on how you handled it in the interview and the exact timelines. You could- Accept the role and hope nobody notices- Claim you started the new job after the interview but realise now it was a mistake - Be totally honest about it If you just didn't correct it and it didn't come up much...then you might just about be able to explain it by saying you didn't think it was helpful to add complexity to a difficult interview situation at that time.

What's the worst that can happen? If you want the dream job then why not explain to them your current circumstances and why you went for option b and give them the reasons why you now want to join them. They either are happy with what you've said and you accept the job or they reject you and you're in the same position you are in now - happy with option b,Learnt the lesson - be open and honest with people. It's your credibility on the line - no one else's. Until you represent a company. Does the company want its people to avoid difficult conversations because the individual found it easier to omit the truth?

I suppose that in the interview, I felt if I mentioned that I had taken role B it would have made me look flaky and lack commitment. In hindsight I know I should have said I took role B, but only because role A has stalled with no information at the time and built a convincing story around that. Now that it has got to the offer stage, if I now tell them that what I said in the interview wasn't right it wouldn't look great for my integrity. If I do decide to give it a go, would it be better to contact HR or the line manager who interviewed me?Thanks again

I would say HR route as they would not care the most and would update the line manager. Please let us know how you get on as I am in a similar position ...but I have not yet been for interview B (final interview) although I am planning to be honest in the interview
