I am a graduating MBA who is extremely interested in management consulting especially with Deloitte. I have been researching it for several months and it really aligns with what I want to do with my career. However I am unsure of how well I would be willing to travel 4 days a week every week for an indefinite amount of time.I see many posts, articles and books saying that Deloitte is very flexible and focused on your work/life balance but I wanted to get some insider views on exactly how this works out. I fully understand that being able to travel at the drop of a hat is crucial to this industry and that is certainly something that I am willing to do. Is it possible to become a consultant and have your assignments be primarily focused in my home city? (Detroit)Is it also possible that I can request an approximate amount of time I can travel? For instance, if I was willing to travel 5-10 days out of the month (just throwing numbers out right now) would that be something that is workable?Unfortunately I am expecting a flurry of responses saying that it depends on the project. Does Deloitte hire under these circumstances at all or are they strictly "Be prepared to travel 100% or nothing?"I appreciate any insight on this as I am trying to find a balance between my professional needs and personal/relationship ones! Thanks

You're not going to like the answer, but it really depends on the project. Unless you're focused on the automotive sector, it's unlikely you'll be spending a lot of time in Detroit (and even if you were, you'd likely have to go visit operations elsewhere in the country).5-10 days travel each month might work on average, but generally projects come in two flavours: requiring extensive, regular travel or requiring very little travel. In other words, it's generally feast or famine. You can find out more from a Deloitte (and US) perspective here: http://www.greendotlife.com/Try reposting your message there and you'll get an insiders view.

In short, Deloitte is being prepared to work an 80-100% travel schedule as an integral part of the job.If you're based in a relatively small office e.g. Detroit, the travel requirement is usually higher anyway. You can always ask about this during the application process - one of the first standardised questions in interview is usually "what is your attitude to travel"? so you can follow up on your answer with a question about Like most firms, Deloitte's "flexible" approach to travel means you being flexible to the firm's/client's preferences rather than vice versa. So you're expected not to complain [too much] whether you're commuting 30 hours a week or stuck in the office on the bench for 30 weeks.
