Hi, I've recently accepted a grad position in FS... and am wondering where in the city i should try and rent.Im thinking either near bow, mile end. Any other suggestions? Also where is the best place to get information, gumtree is a good start, and i dont really want to get ripped off by estate agents...Thank you

I presume your FS job is in the City or Canary Wharf, which is why you're looking at inner east London.Bow and Mile End have some decent places, but also a lot of really dodgy places so you need to be sure to see around a few places to get a feel for the area. If you're prepared to look around, prefer to live in a more "real", "urban" or "multicultural" setting, then you can find some nice new-build flats there. For similar, but with more space, you could look at some of the subdivided Victorian houses (not the small terraced houses) out by Stratford or Leyton. If you are looking for somewhere a bit quieter, safer and/or more sanitised then you could look at Canada Water or out along the DLR routes for newly-built flat complexes. It can be a bit dead - which you'll either find peaceful or very boring.I'd also recommend looking along Southbank and near Waterloo. Although most stuff is pretty expensive, and housing is generally in shorter supply, if you can find one of the affordable social housing sublets it's a good deal and excellent for communications.Gumtree is a good place to flathunt as you can usually build up a fairly reliable judgement on the quality of accommodation based on the advert.Although the cheap places are tempting, the reality is that you probably won't find anywhere you'd want to live for an extended period for under £125/wk.A lot depends on where you are working, how long you are prepared to commute for, what kind of area you want to live in and what standard of accommodation you want. For example, there are some really nice places in London to live, but if you're working on the other side of the city, you would be better off actually living outside London in terms of costs, quality of life and accommodation and commuting time.

Would agree with Canada water/surrey quays. Used to live there and it's very peaceful, lovely to walk around and it's hardly any time to the city.

If you're working in the city then Clerkenwell is a great place. There's some great loft style apartments although could be on the pricey side. It's quiet at the weekends but is still only a moment from Islington and covent garden if you want more action. Great for after work socials too. You could probably walk to work.

Peckham, Harlesden, West Ham - you would find these areas really interesting places to live.

I'd go with Canada Water having lived there for a year and London for the last 5 years - especially if you're just moving to London. Very safe, clean, peaceful, very close to the city and canary wharf - you'd go a long way to find better.

Camberwell, Blackheath, Greenwich, Dulwich ... so many good places. If you want to save yourself from getting ripped off stick to South East or East London. West London's old hat these days anyway ;-)

I live in Walthamstow. You might get the odd ribbing about having an E17 post code (Brian Harvey etc) but its actually not a bad place at all (nice parks, the village, some decent places to eat) - share a nice flat with 2 mates for much less than £125/wk. The best thing is, its 15mins to Liverpool Street, and 20mins to Oxford Circus on the Victoria Line - and it's in Zone 3 so you won't pay a fortune to commute.

Thank you all for your input. I did live in greenwich last year, but it was quite near deptford! To be honest I'm just looking for a place to share,.. so i can save the pennies towards a deposit one day. But at the same time, I don't want to live in a squat! Just out of curiousity, what are the verdicts on the central line? As i've always heard bad things about it!

Northern Line..try the circle line, it's the breeze. The problem with St Johns Wood is that it's quite close to Kilburn....but it doesn't mean I wouldn't live there!

I have a flat in Honor Oak Park, 5 minutes from Dulwich. I have a douible room in a 2 year old flat, en-suite, wooden floors, sky lights and modern kitchen. £450 pm + bills, the flat is 5 minutes from Honor Oak Park station and London Bridge is 11 minutes, I do the journey every day or I scooter into the City.Jason.
