I've always wondered how people cope with back-to-back 80 hour weeks and still manage to maintain a high quality of work. Is there something they are doing that I'm not?? The expresso shots just don't quite do it for me because my eyelids still feel very heavy... Anyone care to share some useful tips?

.. most do not maintain the quality of work as far as I can tell... you are probably doing better than you think. expresso shots are a short term fix - will only sort you out for an hour or two, then you have to keep taking them. eat well, exercise, stay healthy, do as I say but not as I do.

I tend to increase the structure in my life during big assignments rather than let it slip as most people do.If you remember that all you need to keep yourself fresh is good quality food, 7 hours peaceful sleep and, perhaps as important as the others but most often overlooked, regular exposure to fresh air.Don't drink more than a pint or two or a large glass of wine to unwind and politely drop out of any non core engagements that you have.Don't be tempted to try to woak all of the time you are awake, your effectivness drops off the scale as you reach exhaustion. Instead, try to add structure by working three twelve hour shifts with thirty mins breaks for food and a walk in between. This works for me, and compared to my colleagues who seem to flap and whinge and start eating crap and drinking more as the pressure grows, it seems a better choice. And no, I am not an anodyne robot, I just prefere to get the work done and party at the end!

"three twelve hour shifts with thirty mins breaks for food and a walk in between"???????????ok and you mean at least 10 hours break/sleep/rest time also between each shift right??if folk on your team are regularly working 36 hour continuous shifts, i suggest they go on some basic project management training. either that or they are literally masochists.

Viva - my advice for your situation is as follows:1. Apply the 80-20 rule. Produce output proportionate to a sensible working week.2. If 1 is not permitted, then tell the manager that he needs more people on the team. Learn to say "no" more often.3. If 2 is not permitted either, then seek new job. Abandon the rat race for something with a bit more sustainability.
