How do you handle favouritism in the workplace? i.e. when when someone appears to be treated better than others and not necessarily for reasons related to superior work performance?Someone I work with is being handed all the best assignments, is being promoted quickly and is constantly being praised even through his work is, quite frankly, pretty mediocre. Part of me thinks "good for him" but on the other hand it does actually affect me because he is getting a bigger slice of the bonus pool, is taking the 'best' assignments (particularly so now that he has built up a bit of relevant experience for the 'good' projects) and is making me feel sidelined. I'm all for him having good relations with the boss, but the constant back-slapping and insider jokes between them are alienating me (it is a small team). What should/can I do?

Success tends to breed success. Looking at my own organisation, those consultants who have recently rolled off a job are often the first to be considered for new roles – even before those who have been on the bench for a while. Project managers and senior consultants tend to turn to those they’ve worked with before as a first port-of-call, looking outside their comfort zone only when they absolutely have to.How to combat this behaviour? Be vocal about your skillset. Find something internal that you can gain genuine recognition for. Become an expert in something, so that when that project comes in, you are the first person they think about. What you are trying to do is become that person that the project manager / senior consultant turns to as someone they trust to deliver the project.A lot of this game is about marketing yourself. As I said above, success breeds success. Once you gain momentum, it’s easy to keep. It’s gaining it in the first place that is the tricky part.

these relationships tend to be quite short lived. I really would not worry. Hang tight, head down, get on with things. You often find that when people get too cosy, it all blows up in the end. Mr Consistent in the background eventually rises to the top...
