Success tends to breed success. Looking at my own organisation, those consultants who have recently rolled off a job are often the first to be considered for new roles – even before those who have been on the bench for a while. Project managers and senior consultants tend to turn to those they’ve worked with before as a first port-of-call, looking outside their comfort zone only when they absolutely have to.How to combat this behaviour? Be vocal about your skillset. Find something internal that you can gain genuine recognition for. Become an expert in something, so that when that project comes in, you are the first person they think about. What you are trying to do is become that person that the project manager / senior consultant turns to as someone they trust to deliver the project.A lot of this game is about marketing yourself. As I said above, success breeds success. Once you gain momentum, it’s easy to keep. It’s gaining it in the first place that is the tricky part.
