What sort of pay rise would you expect to get when changing jobs? I want at least 20% to cover risk of new job, extra hours etc. I'm not changing job for a few K rise, but I'm told I'm asking too much. It's just not worth my while to change jobs for a small rise and give up the good reputation I have built up in current job, network of contacts etc.What sort of rise did you get when moving?

I'd need at least 20% to change jobs. I agree with you, there is risk in moving from a safe position to the 'unknown' and that risk commands a premium. What if you don't settle in and get fired after 6 months? That in my view is a BIG risk (medium probability, very high impact). You simply cannot judge how you'll settle in based on a handful of 1 hour interviews and looking at their website.Plus as you correctly mention you also have the hassle of building up your reputation from square 1 again, proving yourself to everybody, learning 'their way' of 'doing things', etc. Would you take all that extra hassle and risk for a few K extra? I certainly wouldn't.

You are looking at this in terms of what you want, rather than from the customer perspective.You can get a pay rise in two ways. Either move from an employer that pays below market to one that pays more; or go for a more senior job.The difference in salary between employers in the same industry for the same job is unlikely to be over 20%. So your choice - stay where you are, move for market rate (<20%), or go for bigger job.

jj&apos;s points are good, but either way I wouldn&apos;t recommend taking the risk for anything less than 20%.Some employers just give lousy pay rises each year because they know people don&apos;t like moving jobs if they can help it. Plus, they are short-sighted tightarses. After a few years in that kind of situation you can easily be underpaid by many thousands.
