Hi, how much salary a graduate should expect in management consulting firms? What are the approximate highest and lowest limits? Is 22,000 GBP too low? Thanks!

You will have to differentiate between IT consulting firms (CapGemini, for instance) and top-tier strategy firms (e.g. McKinsey, Booz Allen, BCG). Leading strategy firms can pay graduate salaries above 30,000 GBP. I work at one, so this is reliable info.

As K says, typical salaries depend on the type of firm. They also depend on type of work and location. McKinsey pays its grads £35k whilst EDS, LogicaCMG, CapGemini (ATP), CSC, Capita, and some others all pay in the £21-23k range. I've seen other management consulting grad jobs (with small firms) paying from £18k.Taking into account the numbers of jobs available in the different roles, £22,000 is probably not far off the median.

Anon,You are slightly wrong there. Can I say, even far off the mark. I work at Capgemini and graduate business consultants take home 32.5K whilst its IT intake take home around 24K-25K.The IT guys pay raise a bit quickly because they can bet promoted almost 3 times within 2 years whilst the Bus consultants typically only get promoted after 18-24 months and still earn more than IT guys on the long run.

I have about 6 years experience in Insurance/IT consultancy and how much can i expect from companies like CapGemini? Does 60k sound way off the mark? How much would it be for a contract position?

Thanks to all who've replied! In application forms where I have to state my salary ranges (expected), should I be slightly aiming for a higher or lower salary? Will it affect the competitiveness of my application?

Although I am starting afresh, with a couple of years of previous work (but not in consulting) I am starting on 40K with one of the boutique firms. So worth pushing if you have some demonstrable qualities...

Accenture pay £28,500. There is also a signing on bonus- £6000 in year 1 and £4000 in year 2. Thus your first 2 years at ACN would give you a tidy sum of £33,500 (before Gordon Brown gets his hands on it).
