Is it difficult to get into strategy or ops consulting after working in market research for companies such as Frost&Sullivan or Datamonitor? How are these companies perceived in the consulting industry (especially the top firms)? Any thoughts on both the US and UK market are appreciated. Thanks!

They don't rate with the top firms - a mid-career transfer from market research to one of the MBB firms wouldn't happen in either the US or UK. However, there is a future for that kind of expertise in the wider consulting industry, with the current growth of marketing consultancy for example. Some market research firms also have their own consultancy wings that advise clients on how to make best use of the data.

Not Strat or Tier 1 but I have met a Consultant in Capgemini Transformation practice who came straight from Datamonitor.

If your story and blend of skills are consistent with what the prospective employer is looking for then yes - absolutely. I speak from having spent 2.5 years at an analyst house and am currently enjoying a fast track trajectory in the Strategy arm of a big 4. In the past 4 weeks I have received unsolicited calls from retained consultants to 2 of the big 4 strat houses. important to note is that the skills you are likely to develop during the early years in an analyst house are precisely what you would develop in a strat house. moreover, you are also likely to get exposure to client facing and team management responsibilities quicker than you might in a larger organisation. i know of 4 year consultants in strat houses who can count on one hand the number of times they have had true client facing responsibilities. conversely, in a smaller analyst house, you could expect to have client responsibilities within the first three months. happy to discuss further offline. best of luck
