LisaCan I suggest you spend some time looking at your own skills and motivations then get an appreciation of the market and how you might fit into it. Consultant covers a multitude of sins including the strategy primas in their ivory towers, implementers and change facilitators through to outsourcers. An IT consultant could be involved in knowledge management, architecture development, IT strategy, ITIL implementation, business process work etc.The various big firms that you see discussed here, in the IT field, will generally split the business up in discipline areas which complement one another, and deliver their services through industry focal workstreams. You could work out what kind of industry you want to work in, and apply your skills to going through that route, or work out where your skills will best serve and go through that route, applying yourself in a number of different industries. It would probably help others to give you some advice if you can elaborate a little on what your skills are and what your motivations are for wanting into consulting.

hi Random, Thanks for your suggestion.I was a teacher in a college, teaching computer science course. I ‘m a master student in computer science, major in human computer interaction(hci). In this area, I do interview with people, analysis their need for software/industry system, design the system from their need and then do the evaluation of the system. The analysis and design are circular. In fact, some companies haven't the position about hci, however, they have similar one-- business analyst.I would like help people and work with people--my foremost idea to be consultant. Now, I want to be an IT consultant in ERP. I think, if I can help enterprise, the enterprise develops well and then the worker in the enterprise will have nice life. But, to be the truth, I am just a girl do not know the market, have no experience in business, just know some java programming, do some project with user, and study SAP software by myself, hoping helpful. You can laugh at me--I follow my seeking to be IT consultant, then lucky I come this website. After I send a thread, I knew sap in IT consultant. After I study it, I found it is in the ERP area. After I search the job, I found no one need ERP consultant without experience. I am lost now. Maybe I should work back as developer in java, but my dream is to be a consultant. No friend beside works in this area, no one to ask, so I send thread here. Random, thanks you again!PS: if I want to know someone’s email, for example, lisa, how can I get it?

LisaSorry if my previous response sounded a little harsh, it wasn't intended. The whole issue of HCI is quite important in the information architecture field, something that the big system integrators are involved with. I've dealt with IBM, whose team is based in Warwick, and Fujitsu whose team were based in Basingstoke as I recall. Clearly there will be otehr locations if you are outside UK.I'd agree that the skillsets in that field are easily extensible across a range of consulting fields, since it involves facilitation, interviewing and analysis. With what you are describing I'm not sure that ERP would be the right route for you.Another route you might want to look at would be internal consulting in somewhere like Reuters, Infoterra or similar. That would give you exposure and some prfile in the marketplace as well as some valuable industry experience which you can take with you on a move into technology consulting.

LisaWhilst I'd be content to look over your letter I really don't know what the market is like in China (your email address domain) and would suggest that you get in touch with a recruiter, which I'm not. There are a few on this board, or someone may be able to point you in the right direction for your area. Tony might be able to suggest something appropriate. The reason for my caution is that my client base has a very specific approach and I would hate to give you unhelpful advice.

Lisa, I have no problem with you asking the question, I'm just not sure I can provide the advice you are looking for.Hopefully one of the professional recruiters will comment on here and they can provide some more specific advice.
