Hi,I currently work in project management for a transport organisation and am keen to move into management consultancy. From my limited research so far I know that Mott MacDonald and AD Little have large transport specialisms. If anyone can identify more firms that specialise in transport I would be grateful.

According to my trusty copy of Management Consultancy magazine (Sept 2006) the league table of consultants to the transport industry for 2006 has the usual suspects that work in all industries (e.g. Accenture, PwC, PA Consulting), but also highlights the following as "players" in transport.Capita (I think Capita Symonds is the specific company within the Capita Group that you need for transport)The Nichols GroupHornagold & HillsConsulting StreamEC HarrisOther background notes you may find useful are that the UK transport consulting market was worth about £237m in 2005 and the biggest single firm's growth in this sector was PA Consulting - its transport practice grew 380% from 2004-5, from £3m to £14.4m revenues.

Nichols Group is a small project management practice. H&H larger and also claim to do management consulting. EC Harris is traditionally a quantity surveyor but like most QS firms has moved into project management. Capita Symonds is a consulting engineer. These are all essentially construction sector firms rather than management consulting firms. Some will dabble in consulting but it's not quite the same set-up. If we are going to mix the two then many of Capita Symonds' peers could also enter the mix and would incidentally p1ss all over the fees quoted for PA below - but much of the fees and much of the work of those organisations mentioned will be of a technical rather than consulting nature.

Serco launched their consulting arm a little while ago - don't know if they're still hiring as intensively, but they conceivably would have a strong transport team.

Mott Mac would be a poor choice. They are not a particularly reputable management consultancy. Very good in engineering but should probably stick to it.Look at PA and PWC.

I think the point of this is that PA, PwC et al. are good generalist advisory firms, but for specific advice for transport clients there are better qualified firms out there, more appropriate to the challenge.
