HI,I want to evaluate my chances to move to Management Consulting. I am currently a Sales Executive in a Telecom company.I have 3 years experiences in this position after an Engineering degree from a top French School.I just recently finished my part time MBA.My question is: What are the chances for a Sales Executive to be accepted as a consultant? Cheers,

i wouldn't rule it out, i've been interviewed by a consulting company with a sales background. use the skills you gained from it to your advantage. Consultancy companies want evidence of entrepenurial skills amongst other things and thats something you can say you developed in sales.

Depends on the type of consulting firm, and the type of consulting work. Consulting firms can run the gamut from boutique firms that specialize in sales training or telecom (where perhaps your skills are valued), to IT, Big 4, strat houses, and everything else in between. Also, when you say Sales Exec for a Telco, do you mean "Nokia Account Manager for Verizon" (not really a sales job, more a relationship manager), or do you mean "California District Manager for Verizon" (responsible for day-to-day sales for 500 mobile phone retail stores), or ??? Again, type of firm that will be interested in you will depend on what it is you're doing exactly. Finally, where did you get your MBA? Depending on the type of firm you want to get into, your school may/may not be important.

Hi, Sorry for the very late reply. I was waiting for the forum to notify me by mail....In fact, my part time MBA is done at La Sorbonne Business School in France. I just moved to London to manage the international business dev of my company. The company that I work with is a major mobile infrastructure provider and the type of sales that I am doing is very entrepreneurial. In fact, the market is innovative and high growth. My role consists of advising customers to expand to new markets using my company's infrastructure. I am preparing the move to consultancy end of 2007.Could you tell me the names of firms that can value my skills (sales training or/and telecom)? Thanks,

Consultants are very bad at selling. Many firms would give you a shot if you've got a good track record and some contacts. My firm makes a point of recruiting senior people from industry. Unfortunately, most of these fail, cos they don't understand consulting. But those few who "get" consulting stand out a mile and are very successful.

"Sorry for the very late reply. I was waiting for the forum to notify me by mail.... "Ha ha ha! Take it your expectations have now been lowered suitably! This forum is so antiquated, it's actually powered by two steam engines sitting in a shed in Rotherham. Email notification, you make me chuckle.
