Im 23, a consultant, and on 43 k. why do i feel im not earning enough? who can pay me more

43k is plenty enough for a 23-year old. You're two years out of uni and know bugger all.

Yup London Kiddo...I hear you...the mercenary approach to so many careers, provokes a mercenary reaction to employess (by employers)and will eventually damage the industry...if it hasnt already...Whatever happened to contribution, enjoyment, usefulness and as I understand your comment, the notion of serving time...?

Not serving time, surely (he has been a manager for 17 years, we have to promote him to director before he retires so he gets his carriage clock) but simply a realisation that there is a limit to how much you can learn in a given time- no matter how good you are

i work in deloitte's strategy bit. did 2 years out of uni and here i am. feeling a bit dissatisfied - is this common in our field?

deloitte's strategy bit? What is that supposed to mean. Thier strat and ops or some niche within Deloitte.Dissatisfaction is common in all fields my son!

Top job, I earn a similar amount and don't earn enough.My friend's a A+E nurse and get assaulted/insulted by matter of course....she doesn't earn enough. My older brother is a trader at Goldmans and he doesn't earn enough.Answer........pull your head out of your ar$e and stop sounding like a 10 year old. You should have become a footballer, although you'd probably think you deserved more.

I work in accenture strat, and am surrounded by people at my level ( almost consultant) that are 23/24 and on that money. I share their need for more; its just simply not enough. Someone in IB after 6 years will make as much as a hgh flying partner in consulting, and an md (equivalent to partner) if head of team can make around 10million$ a year. is THAT enough? i dunno. but 43k is certainly not.

Peters - what would a C1 earn in accenture strat as a base and as a bonus?

george - you sound like my ex - obsessed with earning x, y and z and pretending to be a "glamorous city girl" before actually knowing anything. she joined a tinpot consultancy and is on more than she used to be in her previous job but will ultimately get annoyed with their pay scales and start bleating about more, particularly when she finds out that the firm she has joined are not even a management consultancy.

a c1 in accenture ( strategy and bcs pay the same at this level) would earn anything from 39-45 dipending on experience and ranking ( and also age iniformally) there is no bonus at this level. EY BAS pay a helluva lot more i hear

Really simple solution for peters and george- join an investment bank

Make a lateral move to another company - seriously. I did exactly that - was pi**** off with my earnings, moved to another consultancy and got a 100% pay rise (doubled it effectively), got promoted 7 months later and got another 25% on top of that plus car allowance. You will reach a ceiling at one employer no matter how good you are or what networking you do or what contacts you have. If you are ambitious and want more money - go out there and get it. You will soon get bored and ask what you really want to do with your life...

£43k after two years? What grade are you and what was the promotion sequence? Think yourself lucky; there are plenty of us there with a good deal more experience on not all that much more money - and without being funny I'm fairly sure I could come and work in your (different) area and do a significantly better job than you.

Six years in IB may see you earn as much as 8 years in strat consulting, say. But NOT as much as a high flying partner of 12+ years' experience.And as for MDs on $10m plus, sure, they exist: they are the ones you hear about in the papers. But they are few and far between. In a given IB, you could count them on the fingers of one hand.If something sounds too good to be true...
