Hi all, Just have a few questions regarding possibility of moving towards consulting, prior experience has been in mainly front office Wealth Management roles, so looking after high net worth clients, and managing investments, where I am currently a portfolio manager. Have been in Banking since leaving University in 2008, worked from back to front, whilst taking CFA 1 and CFA 2 and IMC and IOC, and holding my license to provide financial advice. Other than that have hons degree in Finance ... done a small stint at Bloomberg on the systems side of things, financial tech. Was just curious what would be the best way to find out more about the path into Consulting.Kind regards, and thank you. M

Just looking at this high-level:The first question I guess is why do you want to make the move? I can completely understand wanting a change (I've done similar things myself) but you've got a solid finance background with those qualifications and experience so I'm curious as to why consulting rather than a move to some other area of finance? Then I guess it depends on what area / type of consulting you're looking at getting into. Your background would probably be a fit for financial services consulting or investment consulting so (if you're interested) you could look into gathering a "hit list" of firms that specialise in this area (e.g. Oliver Wyman (who've a good name in the field) and Capco or Towers Watson and Morningstar on the investment consulting side. Large firms like McK, Deloitte, KPMG etc have financial services consulting areas) and then try and contact people either through this forum / LinkedIn / personal contacts to get a better sense of what types of projects they do, culture of the firm and what you'd do day-to-day. Once you're in (especially relevant to firms that cover a range of sectors / types of consulting), I'm not sure what the chances are of you doing other types of consulting work as there's more chance of you being pigeon-holed given your background. If you're looking at doing something completely different / with a different sector focus then I would say that it's probably going to be more challenging and you might want to look at doing an MBA to get a broader knowledge base / change careers and get in through campus recruiting.Hope that's of some help.

Ah, of course. So right now you're working in a front-office wealth management role looking after HNW clients and managing investments, and now you'd like to move into consulting.Well, the steps are really quite simple for somebody like you:1. Phone your GP and ask for a referral to the neurology unit of your local hospital.2. Explain to the surgeon that you would like your brain removed.3. Send out some applications to consultancy firms and explain that you have recently undergone a procedure that will help you adapt to the consulting world more effectively.4. Enjoy your new career!Mind you, if you're already seriously thinking about going from wealth management to consultancy, you may well have completed steps 1 and 2 already!
