I'm looking to break into consulting. I'm a 3rd year at the University of Birmingham studying Mathematics with Business Management. I achieved a 2.1 in my second year and hopefully I should be on track for a 1st overall. I've had 1 months work experience at KPMG in Transactions & Restructuring. Other minor work experience (waiter etc.) and involved in a range of sporting activities and societies but no major roles such as society president. I've applied for various firms so far with some success. So my question is which firms would I realistically have a chance of getting into for management consulting?I'm thinking: The big 4CapgeminiAccentureIBMNot MBB, but realistically what about the strategy firms; Oliver Wyman, L.E.K, Redshift, CHP Consulting, Marakon, PA Consulting, OC&C, etc...Another point to mention, my university course is actually a 4 year MsC, I can decide before March whether I want to do a 4th year. Will an MsC in Mathematics with Business Management make any difference to the BsC? I'm thinking the only major benefit would be more time for work experience and a summer internship this summer. All advice welcome, thanks in advance

You would (should?) be absolutely fine for Big 4/Cap/IBM/Accenture etc. Only thing to note is some of them have fairly high requirements at A level that you need to take into account, I think EY is 3 As at A-Level now. Not the fairest of markers compared to a degree, but they need to sift the apps somehow!

I got 3 A's and a B at A level so that should be fine?Anyone got any idea on the others? Oliver Wyman, L.E.K, Redshift, CHP Consulting, Marakon, PA Consulting, OC&C, etc...Do these firms literally only hire from "target" universities as I haven't seen any of them doing anything on university of Birmingham campus but UoB is a russell group uni...Theres a few deadlines coming up for these firms for internshiops/ grad jobs but I don't want to waste a lote of time applying if I don't realistically have a shot?

Forget CHP and Redshift: no brand value.Forget PA: poor reputation and not considered a 'strategy house' by anyone familiar with the industry.I'd have thought you'd be better off in the strategy practice of any of the Big 4 (incl. KPMG, where you seem to already have a toe in the door) than Cap/IBM. I'm not sure how Strategy in Accenture compares to Big 4. I imagine behind Deloitte, ahead of the rest. For the better strategy firms, once the initial mountain has been filtered, if you got through, you'd be competing with Oxbridge and top European/American schools, all with internships (often in investment banking, or the MBBs themselves), all with Firsts and straight As, all with extra-curriculars, many quite attractive too (an unofficial criterion). I'm nobody to try deter someone from pursuing his dream, just be aware of the reality before putting yourself through it.My 2c, as you have a finite amount of time to invest in application and interview prep, be the best candidate you can be for your first group (Big 4 / ACN). Then, with whatever time you have left over, submit whatever you can pull together for ATK, OC&C, LEK, Marakon, without pinning any hopes on it.

Thanks Dan!Good advice, just quickly though why do you think that CHP and Redshift have no brand value? Would they not be good companies to have on your CV?

Quite simple - I've been working in strategy for years, and I'd never heard of them!
