Graduate - Get a 2:1 or above, apply to grad scheme. pass the interview and get taken on.Experienced Hire - Need a lot more background from you... i.e. experience to date, qualifications etc.

I have background and sales experience within a managerial role but it hasn't been for a while (since my daughter). My current CV consists of various NVQ's in Retail & Distribution/ Leisure & Tourism. I have just completed a FdA Service Sector Management (which is a level 5) I missed out the Bachelors (level 6) due to child commitments and now i'm currently doing a CMI L7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership (Level 7). Obviously i have missed the level 6 which would make me a graduate however i think the level 7 (nearly a Masters Degree) would stand me in good stead. Would i need to complete the full masters or do you think the Diploma should get me through the door of a company under a grad scheme?

Donna I think you are going to struggle to get a consulting firm interested, even for the grad scheme. Consultancy is a conservative industry (perhaps a hang over from its accountancy beginnings) - they will be looking for a 'classical' education - 2.1 Degree, in a difficult subject, from a good university. As it sounds like you have working experience I suspect you may also be too mature for grad scheme entry - you would normally have graduated in the last 1 - 2 years or so. And with a daughter to consider you may also find the travel commitments could be a deal breaker for you (although many consultants do manage to compromise travel and family life it is one of the main reasons experienced hires leave the industry).Perhaps look at your own industry more laterally - are there opportunities around interesting projects you could get involved in? Consultancy type work is undertaken by internal teams as well as external consultants, and often the two collaborate closely - which could be a route in if you impress a programme lead enough for them to want you on board.Hope this helps?
