Is this possible with a PhD, good extra curriculars and 5yrs work exp? Or is it once a techie, always considered so?

I made the move a few years back. So, it's possible but it all comes down to the interview process.

Yes to both questions. Yes, you might be able to move to McKinsey BTO. And yes, you would still be considered a techie. In the same way that TI and S&O are differentiated at DC, BTO and the strategy practices are differentiated at McK.

I have got through to the final interview round twice for BTO (comming from Deloitte TI) so i am sure it is possible if you are good enough. They told me to reaply next year - but i'm not sure if i want to go for it a third time (and enter as a first year analyst!).
