I have recently been offered a role in KPMG advisory as an assistant manager in London- any ideas please on the type of work i can expect at this level. I have more than 13 years of work experience , will this be too much of a step down from what i m currently doing (i have been in IT throughout, worked with a few big names, done delivery, consulting and pre-sales).How different is it to that of a manager level? What are the parameters for performance assessment?

Would help to know what area of the business you'd be in. Presumably technology related? Expect you'll be working with vendors on implementation doing BA type roles, maybe managing IT tenders, doing outsourcing business cases, maybe some IT cost reduction / IT strategies - but probably less common. Performance assessed against how well you do those things whist pissing as few people off as possible.Assistant manager is still reasonably junior. <5 years experience from graduating unless I'm mistaken. Responsibility for small workstreams, maybe a junior team member. Managers will be expected to lead large workstreams and medium sized projects, be slicker at pulling sales material together, identify and close sales opportunities with their clients to grow accounts. Plus more expecation that you'll manage upwards both internally and with the client. Also higher level of technical expertise expected but shouldn't be so much of a problem for you.

Have you been told within which part of the business? There are several testing teams across MC, Tech, even some in Tax. Is your team selling testing services, advisory, testing management? As an Assistant Manager you can expect to:- Lead workstreams and projects- Be responsible for the planning and execution against agreed scopes of work- Lead small teams during delivery- Be expected to contribute to business development in the form of responding to proposals etc. - Actively take part in practice development, for example learning events- Act with relatively little supervisionAs a Manager, you will:- Be accountable for projects - it's your head on the line if delivery goes wrong (along with the partner or director in charge)- Be responsible for delivery to budget, time and quality including managing commercial and other risks- Lead larger teams - Need to demonstrate contribution to BD and origination of new opportunities to be considered to "meet expectations" (unless you are in one of the few non-client facing teams)- Actively develop team, market and capability somehow - say via new propositions - Be able to run entirely independently during delivery and be managed on an exception basis - you are the first point of call for problems
