There's no clear answer on this except it depends on what drives you and what stage of life you're at.Consulting offers a great variety of projects working at a high level with very little of the politics. Depending on which consultancy you join and which practice, it could be that you don't actually travel that much. Certainly, most government practices have a wide range of assignments that work pretty much civil service hours. If you like your consulting a bit more exciting you probably will have to travel, but depeding on what the other half does you can use that as an excuse to give them cheap holidays in nice parts of the world.I think most consultants aren't simply motivated by money, it's about the challenge and variety. There's no denying for some it causes problems in their relationships though. For me, I've spent about 40% of my time on the road with a young 2 year old at home and that's been a reasonable balance, at times when it's been 100% away from home it can be hard though. Overall, I think the pros have outweighed the cons.
