Hi all,Wanted to know your thoughts on the below article and get a feel for how common it is - particularly once leaving consulting. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/feb/01/loneliness-at-work-introvert-sadness-bereft-in-bustling-officeI've always found consulting to be a very socially engaging business to be in - delivering in small teams, the need to bond quickly (and attempts to accelerate this through frequent social events) the internal communities, the away working etc. I'll be moving to industry soon, to a business where there are none of these things. On top of that i'll be doing a role that will require me to work independently quite a lot of the time. Often with the business, but in a 'consulting' role. I'll be probably a bit younger than the average in the business. Are there normally outgoing people out there who move from consulting to these roles and struggle to adapt? Thanks,

Yes it is an issue *depending on the team*. I went to industry. Initially internal consulting group but then things move on. Noticeable was that the social side wasn't great (and has got worse due to company having some tough times)! It is a symptom of the age / social stage / commutes of those around. It is noticeable that the management seem to socialise only with themselves. And then it is mostly with the people that they came up through the company with. I'd say make sure the team you are looking at joining you have some fit with. Also investigate social activities such as lunchtime run clubs. And look back fondly on the consulting days, both for the friends you made and the self important arseoles you were forced to network with in a Hilton on a trading estate!

The workplace is busy and bustling, full of people coming to and from meetings, photocopiers, and each other's cubicles. However, despite the high potential for social interaction, many people still feel lonely at their place of employment. They, like most other people, sit down with their coffee or tea in the corner and work diligently, nodding to familiar faces, but these actions do not contribute to making positive connections and building human relationships. This type of unwanted solitude can be difficult to discover, as displaying emotions at work is not the social norm in society. People are afraid of appearing weak, and therefore cloak themselves in order to avoid judgment.
