At present I work for a small climate change think tank, I am interested in joining an established consultancy to work with companies as they begin to develop strategies towards the carbon economy.I am looking for advice from those working with anyone from the big four to niche strat houses to gain an idea of where this sort of service offering is already rolled out and at if not what sort of thoughts are people having.

Both BCG and McKinsey have an emerging climate change practice. But it is going to be near impossible to make your career at either of them doing solely climate change work: both because they prize generalism (at least in the lower tenured groups) and because while many clients are asking for climate change workshops, the number kicking off full-blown projects is relatively limited.

Try Enviros. No 1 brand in environmental consulting, and major player in climate change. Was independent until recently bought out by Alfred McAlpine. The general management consultancies (so far) aren't serious in this area. Fee rates too low and skills sets too different.

I've been the business for some time. There just is not enough money to be made to warrant consulting fees. I mean who cares about the environment when there are more pressing matters to deal with in the energy world. Also, how is something like wind power going to replace fossil fuel or nuclear. It only makes money if it is subsidised by the consumer and once the consumer gets tired of doing this..then what??Climate chnage is like disease, poverty and inequality: unpalatable, but something that will remain into perpituity.Tipclimate change is seen as a hinderance to energy companies day-to-day operations not something to commercially exploit.Tip
