I'll try not to make this too long. I'm planning to move from Canada to Europe for personal reasons. For those that don't know, when you transfer in PwC to another country, you quit from the first firm and get hired by the second. It's pretty hard to get an official transfer. You have to be a top performer (based on a bellcurve), have worked at the firm for at least 2 years, the local firm needs to have good connections with the firm abroad, and the partners at both firms have to love you. I started last summer and my performance is on par with my colleagues. I'm not bad at my job, but I'm not a superstar. Still, I'm hoping to get an unofficial transfer (aka get an offer from the European firm and pay for my own moving costs). I'm worried if I loop my coach/office into my plans, I'll be dinged and won't get on good projects. For what it's worth, my office doesn't have good connections to the European office, but my coach transferred from Europe (different country though). How do I navigate this without screwing myself over? Would it be better for me to just reach out to the European office directly? Should I start these conversations ASAP, or should I wait until I'm close to my moving day (ie a month before)?

As soon as you apply for a role with another territory, the hiring manager will check in with your home country. Therefore if you quit, move and apply the question will be "why didn't you go for internal transfer?" If the reason for that is your performance or your partner relationship isn't strong enough, the European firm might think twice about hiring you. Network firms like PwC are all about keeping hold of people, so I would recommend talking to someone you trust about potential opportunities to move within the firm.
