Has anyone out there accepted a counter-offer after threatening to resign? Have you lived to regret it, or was it the right move? How much of a salary hike were you offered to stay put?

Did this when I was 26 - found a new job with Company B, was offered more to stay by Company A, took it. Stayed 12 months, realised that the reason they were not not paying me it originally was because the role was not there. Left to join Company B. Am now 36 - my advice 10 years on is leave. In truth, most people who are switched on don't leave for money. They leave for opportunities, location, control. If you are motivated to look for a new job, then you probably have better reasons than money. Good luck!

Agree with Tricky. Once you've communicated your intent to leave, then leave. If all you're after is a pay increase or a promotion, you should speak to your superiors and communicate your desire (as well as why you deserve it) directly. If they won't give you a raise or a promotion without the threat of leaving, I'm not sure it's the right company for you anyway.
