I've got 2 interviews coming up for an IT PM role with a large bank.Problem is that I'm a PM and know next to nothing about IT?!Assuming a common sense approach to programme management (5 years experience), can I satisfy the potential employer that little technical experience should not be a hurdle.

Well, in theory PM is about the processes and you need not know about the underlying content... I used to be a non-IT PM but never tried to make the transition. On the other hand I worked with PMs who had variously done aerospace, automotive, construction, utilities, banking, IT, etc etc and they had all managed to make it transferrable so I guess it's not out of the question. Hit them with a vit of PRINCE and a bit of V-Model...Good luck!

RG - nonsense. Or, as the Germans would say....Quatsch.No successful PM can really be divorced from content...otherwise you become a glorified, issue avoiding milestone chaser.....as can be evidenced by the ACN peeps on my current project.Keep trying....one day you'll come up with a worthwhile post. Bless.

Well, I did say "in theory". It's not something I've cared to try myself but as I say, I've seen it done.

You may be able to get a position, but it depends on your level and what they are looking for. For mid to senior roles you will need/benefit from relevant FS experience to succeed.

Read the title, I did say blag it :o)Saying that, my PM experience tells me that the technical content (it's IT not FS) is a significant factor in an individuals ablity to deliver projects well. In theory this shouldn;t be the case.

Mr Myagi "my PM experience tells me that the technical content is a significant factor in an individuals ablity to deliver projects well. In theory this shouldn;t be the case." Your experience is right, the theory is not. if you are aware enough to ask the question, you migt be able to blag it but will probably spend a lot of your time keeping your head above water. I have 7 years as IT PM and my gut feelings is that it is easier to move between areas of IT (ERP, CRM, BCP, bespoke development, web services) than move between IT and other functional areas. IT projects do have a common structure and they are different to other areas - I tried your opportunity in reverse. Sometimes it has worked, others not!

Mr. Myagi,If you know next to nothing about IT, you need only to employ/consult with an IT expert to deliver his Knowledge to your Pool.... thus allowing each to work in their own Fields of Strength to the Benefit of the Other .... a Mutually Beneficial Joint Venture Creating Further AddVentures.Making things happen with IT is Sensitive and ESPecialised.
