With consulting often being an all encompassing career, I wonder how many of you have side ventures in addition to your day job?Anyone have a story of when a side venture has become your day job? I know Tony moved from strategy consulting to recruitment so perhaps this is one. I have a few of my own - one is community focused and the rest small businesses of which the latter have been crafted out to the spare time I had between two redundancies. Always interesting to see whether people find the time or deem it worthwhile. Also many of my mates have quizzed me on the effect of these on your CV - they are not on mine, Linkedin is a different story though! Discuss ...

Very hard to do your own ventures given the workload of consulting ... Also difficult to include in the CV ... I don't think people really value 'side projects' Having said that doing other stuff is absolutely key if you want to make the jump into entrepreneurship. Easier to do once you get a job in industry with more regular hours. It also works well with freelancing which you can do after a few years of consulting.

I know a guy that wrote a book at work. He worked in a place where they had a "face time" culture so decided to put it to good use by typing away like crazy on his new book.

I have some buy to let property and planning to increase this over the years to eventually replace consulting income (in 10-15 years). For side ventures try to think of opportunities that bring largely passive income.

It makes me chuckle that at my current firm they send emails every so often asking for people to "submit" their ideas for new any innovative ventures and offer you a £50 voucher in return. Anyone with a seriously good idea who then gives it to free to their employer instead of running with it themselves is missing a trick for sure.
