Hi all,I am currently undertaking an MSc in Financial Decision Analysis at Portsmouth University, which is where I also gained my Undergraduate degree in Accounting with Finance. Unfortunately, I was only able to achieve a 2:2 as a result of extenuating circumstances which occurred during my second year. On top of that, my A-Levels were not great (240 UCAS points) as a result of the same extenuating circumstance. However, I am not trying to paint a sob story or cue the violins, I just want to kick-start my life again and doing my MSc is the first step in trying to get back on track, however hard I will have to work to do that. I have recently been taking some serious consideration as to where I want to take my career path after reaching a cross road. Given my degree, the accounting path was the obvious sector which was promoted to me throughout my course, but after gaining some first-hand experience in financial and management accounting (one year industrial placement with American express and temp work for various other companies) I have decided that is not for me. I have started looking into the Management consulting sector, and initially strategy or financial consulting stands out to me as what I would like to pursue. However, I am fully aware that these markets are extremely competitive, and given my 2:2, I was hoping that I could get some advice as to how to proceed. Many thanks

With a 2:2 your chances of getting in at any consulting firm are slim to none. The only way in that I can think of would be 3-5 years down the road with specialist experience. At that point even if you did get in I would think it wouldn't be an amazing career move. You won't want to hear this but if I were in your shoes I would stick in my industry and build the best career I can rather than listening to the siren song stories of how awesome consulting is. Accounting is a great career so don't spend your life thinking it's rosier elsewhere - buckle down and get on with it.
