Hello,I am currently working as a Sr. Consultant with Deloitte consulting and expected to be promoted to manager next year. However i have received an offer from IBM GBS as Managing Consultant within the financial services industry. I would like to understand whether i shpould go ahead with IBM offer or not? Also if someone can share some lights on:1) how the pay rises and bonus at IBM GBS 2) how does the performance appraisal process 3) how is the nature of work at IBM GBS4) what band does managing consultant represents5) how long would it take to get promoted to the sr. managing consultant level

I am engaged to a charming, beautiful heiress who won a gold medal for gymnastics at the last Olympics and now works as a swimwear model. She adores me and is begging me to marry her later this year. Unfortunately she does not believe in $ex before marriage.A 63-year old, 18 stone wino that hangs around the corner shop has offered me a quickie at her flat above the shop if I agree to jilt my girlfriend. Is there anyone that could help me compare the two likely experiences and how my life will develop based upon the choice available.------------------------------------------------IMHO – Stick with that nice Del girl. The comparison does not stand up.

No the analogy is whether it it better to be patient with the better opportunity in the long run, or sacrifice it for a far less attractive, but more expedient opportunity.

I recently came across a website that has professional reviews of companies like both Deloitte and IBM in various fields including consulting. They talk about quality of work as well as salary. A lot of their information is free so it can't hurt to check out professional reviews.

Vault is cr*p, out-of-date, focussed on US college grads who don't know any better... and they charge you for the pleasure! Better to use glassdoor.com or just search this forum.

Couple of quick replies1) Bonus can be up to 10% but more likely to be 2.5% and don't expect much on the pay rise front.2) Managing Consultant is a band 8 - will probably take about 2-3 years to get to Senior Managing consultant depending upon which areas you work in.

It seems to me that anyone who has left a big firm to go into a similar company has ended up never sticking at anywhere for more than 2 years - always moving onto the next offer. It's a living I suppose but seems like a lot of work!

Well... nothing ever stays the same forever. IDC has just ranked IBM Business Consulting leader. Link below:http://idcdocserv.com/239484E_IBMIf I had to rank he Biggies for 2014 I'd say:IT Consulting/Strategy1. IBM GBS (top 3 in all IT related categories e.g. Social, Cloud, AMS etc. - overall number 1)2. Accenture (very strong in cloud)3. Deloitte4. PwC5. CognizantBased on various IDC reports I'd say we'e entering the "IBM Re-Inventing Itself" phase. IBM seems to do this every 10-15 years. Considering that in 2012 IDC ranked IBM as having 0% share for Strategy Consulting and in 2013 IBM had 3.44% share. If this is 7-10% at the end of 2014 then I'd say IBM is the place to be...If you absolutely had to choose I'd say Deloitte, IBM, Accenture would be top picks. Then PwC, KPMG and last EY.

That report is Feb 2013, I'd say you're using the term 'just' pretty loosely. IBM/ACN will always be close to the top with IT consulting, but that's a small part of what this website focuses on. I left IBM after 2 years. It's a good place to be a Project Manager / IT Architect... but not so much a consultant in my view

Depends on part of GBS you join. If it's AMS then you're supporting applications. If it's AIS then I'd say you're going to be BA, PM or IT Arch.If it's BAO then that's more analytics. If it's Strategy and Transformation then you're doing IT Strategy, some business strategy, Business transformation etc. I'd say this is actually where you need to join. Most people mistakingly join AIS. Not saying you couldn't get a role to do those things in AIS but it's just not what AIS does. Mind you... that report you read is for IBM Strategy and Transformation.

How long have you been in IBM? The way you write is typically how IBM define their business areas in theory, not practice You will consistently see S&T & BAO people doing standard system integration work because there isn't much IT strategy/analytics work to go around

Big push to move away from that. Seems to be an IBM UK issue because in US there is better definition of roles. It's slowly being changed. Which were you in?I think the stuff in the report (in my first post) will be the major play for S&T.
