Hi all - I'm looking to move from industry to consulting. I've received mixed advice about whether to present a traditional CV (ie chronological list of positions with achievements listed under each) or a skills-based CV (ie list relevant projects/experience/skills under headings such as Risk Management, Organisation Design, etc). Some say that consultancies want to see list of work positions and achievements so that it's clear what I've done.Others say that because I'm moving from industry and have an atypical CV, I should show transferable skills using a capability-based CV. Does anyone have any views/advice on which is better? Thanks.

I would say go with the traditional format. From my point of view as a recruiter it is always simpler and easier to identify the most suitable candidates based on the last 3 years of their career.Having past projects/skills detailed under various Headings is all good and relevant content but if it was something you did back in 1999 it wont have as much an impact as more recent experience.Best to stay chronological.

I second what headhunter advises.Capability CVs are best deployed when moving within the industry you already have an established track record in and you are trying to distinguish yourself against direct competitors with perhaps similar experience. As you will be changing industries (although potentially still working with clients from your current sector) stick to the traditional chronological CV. If you want to bring out specifics e.g. experience in risk management or organisational design, use your cover letter to bullet some key points.
