Holla!I need some advice here which I hope you guys can provide...please![b]What is the difference between an MBA and a Masters of Engineering Management degree? And why would I do one over the other?[/b]I have a Computer Engineering degree and have been working for a good 5 years. However, I want to take a break from working while still doing something productive (I've already done the whole travel thing...). So I decided I was going to do my MBA and have been studying for the GMAT since. I came across the MEM degree while researching schools, and it definitely caught my eye. But I can't seem to find too much info on the difference between the two.If it helps, I honestly don't know what I want to do with my career. Although I would like to stay within the tech field. I tend to get a stiffy when thinking bout all the new cool things that technology can do...Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

Hello, assbandit. I imagine the difference is that one is full of fluff and BS, whereas the other is technical and potentially useful but less universally applied to whatever you might apply for in the future.

Whichever you choose, make sure that the business school concerned can provide the counselling your desperately need. You may also want to read some books on appropriate communication, social monitoring and self awareness. I also recommend 'biting the pillow' by Mr Cool.Toss a coin. Yes I said coin.

As you said "[i]I honestly don't know what I want to do with my career[/i]" you need to at least a make a clear goal where you want to reach, both courses take you to different routes..... like MEM may help you get promoted into a managerial role in the same technology or industry where career is dominated by engineering/technology. MBA may give you entry into management where you are more towards business management of the company/ corporation. After an MBA you can take up Engineering Management roles but with an MEM you may not be applicable for roles that require MBA business strategy and network. Hmmm...I kind of see the difference but I'll certainly need more info. I'll probably contact the Unis directly to see what further info they can provide me.That Tufts Uni page is just substanceless marketing rhetoric! Will I be able to move into strategic consulting roles after or will I be stuck in operations/project management?[/b]I'm still leaning towards an MBA at one of the elite schools. If I don't get in, I'll look to the MEM degree at a uni renowned for their engineering/tech such as MIT, Stanford or Uni of Sydney (represent baby!!!). I got an MEng in Engineering Management directly after undergrad (studied computer engineering).In my school, the MEng program was only 1 yr. A lot of engineering undergrads decide to stay an extra yr to get the MEng. It's almost like a 5th yr of undergrad.For me, I used it as a transition from a very technical background to something more business-oriented. As such, I took the majority of my courses from the bschool. Most others in my program took largely engineering courses.With that said, here are the main differences between the 2 programs...* MEng is 1 yr, MBA is 2 yrs* MEng is largely full of engineering students who just finished undergrad; MBA is full of students w/ several yrs of work experience and varying undergraduate degrees* MEng course work (for Eng Mgmt) is very flexible; MBA courses are mostly taken from the bschoolAfter I graduated, I took a job in consulting at the pre-MBA level. This probably doesn't relate to you, since you will be an experienced hire.
