Hi ThereI got a job offer from IBM as Network Administrator - Band 7. They are offering £ 48K and as per manager this the maximum money he can offer for this position. I have to support their Lotuslive operation. I have 8 years experience both technical and non technical mainly on networking/operational environment. I was expecting anything between £ 55-60k.I have spoken with another IBMer whom I know for a while and he says you just need to push him for more money and don`t step back otherwise you will be on the same salary for some time. Its very hard to move to next level within IBM mainly because of politics.What are your thoughts ? Any advice ? Should I ask for more money or simply avail the opportunity to move in first and later look for better opportunities within IBM ? Thanks in advance !

I think you should first do some research and find out about the industry standards, average salary for that position. If what they are offering you is less, then you should listen to your friend. Else, grab the opportunity!

Couple of questions - Which area of IBM is this offer from, is it London based? What is your current salary? All of these will impact the package are offering you.

Band 7 ceiling is 50k so your manager is right. Also, remember that band 7 does not get car allowance

I was in IBM France a couple of years ago.I do agree, there is no opportunity to increase your salary (Palmissano focuses on operational margin for the Earn Per Share increase).Get what you want or refuse the job.
