I joined a consultancy company 6 months ago with 10 years experience in industry. I am now 3 months into a 12 month project and frankly am disillusioned that I have been left my company to “get on with it” with the client. I have little support and my project manager is disinterested.I feel I’ve been dumped and am nothing more than a money-making machine.Any constructive advice?Phil

Yep... get used to it. This is one of the prime differences between industry and consulting. You often won't get much guidance or support and its up to you to figure it out. Right now I'd guess your brain is screaming out for some comforting words but trust me they aren't coming. If you really can't cope with this you need to get someone to listen to you. Screwing up a relationship with a client will not win you any friends and I'm sure your firm wouldn't want it that way anyway. Swallow what's left of your pride and tell your project manager that the project is way off the rails and you need to sit with him and sort out a way forward. If he doesn't listen go to your line manager and have the same conversation and point out that you will need some support through the early part of your career. BTW, you are just a money making machine, what else were you hoping for.

Thanks Hard Case - and your take on the situation is right. I have to learn quickly that I am in a different world. Already had discussions with my project manager (who wishes to remain hands off whatever the risk I am exposing him to) and line manager (who is concerned that I will leave the company through his screwy project) but nothing has changed in the last month.Any development seems to be "on the job" which actually means "trying it out with a client while charing fees). This means that I am not doing anything different to the way I thought, acted and delivered when I worked in industry. All in all its been a steep learning curve!
