What's up Consulting World!Let me explain my situation...I get a new consulting job about 7 months ago. I work my ass off, impress a lot of people including customers, get told two weeks ago that I will be taking the role of my managers position (Team Leader). More responsibility, etc... I'm stoked!!!I officially start this role 1 July, but I'm in handover stage now and pretty much taken on the role wholly. However, there has been no talk of any change in pay or any other benefits. So essentially, if I stay silent, the company gets more of me than before, for free! So can you smart people out there give me some advice on how to approach this situation and ask for more pay?I plan on approaching management with what I did before, what I do now, how it's more important, blah blah...pay me more or give me more benefits like bonus or extra leave. The only thing is, I have never asked for a pay rise before. So if they say no, what is the best way to handle that situation? Also, I don't want to turn this situation sour...I'm 26 and been promoted to manage a team who are all older than me by at least 4 years. I think I'm in a good position now in my career, but I want to avoid being a work patsy! All your comments are much appreciated.Holla from Sydney!

as is often the case you need to be doing the job before you are actually promoted to it, so I dont think trying to negotiate a pay rise just yet will wash. My inclination would be wait until you have done your first year, then use this promotion and the benefit you create in the new role as ammunition to negotiate a raise.

Agree with marsaday, but with a few additions…..1) raise the issue NOW before you take the role on. Basically say - "I'm really happy that the company has confidence in me, and I'm really enjoying it here, etc, etc. I'm assuming that this more senior role is a role promotion and not a grade promotion and , but I'd apprecatie your guidance on what my performance needs to be so that I can turn this into a grade promotion at my next appraisal. Is that feasible?" This way you’re not pushy NOR a pushover. Shows you know that you have to deliver before you get tha bucks, but shows you’re switched on too.2) If in doubt about salary, always ask who would they get to do you job if you were not there. In your case it is probably someone more senior, more experineced and more tenured. Gently point that out in your appraisal and again say something like "I appreciate that person X has more experince than me, so I'm not expecting to be earning the same salary, but as he is the person that would replace me if I was not here to do the job, then how to do I close the gap between our salaries?"I ALWAYS used these two techniques in parallel and was never diappointed.Good luck.

As long as you talk to them in a professional manner and explain to them why you are demanding a raise, I'm sure they will oblige to your demand. But make sure to be open minded about some negotiations regarding the amount of your salary.
