HiI am looking for some advice from the forum on what you would do in my position.I work in a business consulting practice (Indian offshore player but they, or at least my practice doesn’t quite do consulting.) In the last three years, of which two years I have been a part of, not one consulting project has been won, those few members from the Big 4 who joined when I did have since left realising what the practice is really about. I.e. being billable doing BA/PM type of work rather than consulting or developing consulting - no new members have joined since consequently.I’ve been at a FS client since join the company, doing BA/Systems Analysis type of work, primarily to build my FS experience, so i stayed put. I came from a big 4 SI, but technology consulting arm doing CRM Consulting; I was hoping to continue this but with banking flavour and more business focus, but unfortunately it’s just been BA job after BA job in the same client - because I’m billable. But now, I’m lost and bit worried that I’ve become a bit too generic with no real depth of FS process or technology to move off. I don't feel the BA career is for me at least not a technology aligned/change BA or one that doesn’t involved depth. I've got 6ish years of experience in IT Sector, but the first two years of my career were on a grad programme, I’m still learning my way but keen to make the moves to achieve my career aspirations (A partner or senior director in a global consulting firm). However something's got to change as i don’t feel where i am now is going to get me there, especially as I’ve been here for 2 years. I’m not stimulated by the work, it’s too generic, not advisory/consulting because the BA role sits in technology office of the client and I’m more interested in operations, business changes, operating models etcI’m not sure where, in terms of employment, and who in terms of help to turn to. It doesn’t feel like my existing employer will have the business consulting work I was expecting, maybe one day in the future, but just not now. I’ve built some time in FS, prior to joining I didn’t have this, but I still need mentoring and developing as a business consultant on the toolsets, I’ve done the training, but without consulting client and colleagues I feel that useless. What do you think? What would you advise?N.B. (I’m British citizen, Bsc(hons) CompSci 2:2, Msc Business Studies and currently a "senior consultant")

Top TopperYou know the answer to your own question. It's written in ten-foot high letters in between the lines of your post. You are working at an IT bodyshop that describes itself as a consultancy in the same way that I could choose to describe myself as a nuclear physicist. Saying and doing are different things, as you have found out; as have the ex-Big4 who have come and gone. The fact that the firm has managed to tempt Big4 folk suggests they may even believe their own image, but it is a mirage and nothing more. The answer is simple. Target firms that do the sort of work that you want to do. You may have to take a salary hit and you may have to be realistic about the sort of firms that will want a Comp Science grad with a 2:2, who no longer wants to work in IT. The senior consultant title is also an irrelevance, I'm afraid. With FS experience you may find more luck in the change management departments of banks, building societies or insurers, rather than at Big4 firms who have their choice of first class degree students from target schools.Realism + Tenacity-squared X Time = Rewarding New Job. That's the nuclear physicist in me!
