Hi allThanks for taking the time to read...I'm a senior consultant in a tier 2 (not MBB, read PWC, Deloitte, EY etc) management and technology consultancy, but not a "managing consultant". As such I am the work horse of the firm. I'm working towards the next step, have fulfilled all criteria except the selling aspect - need to demonstrate a pipe line before I will be promoted. The work can be good, some of the projects are amazing on paper but the reality is that whilst we don't simply sell the same by the book solution to clients and I genuinely believe we produce good client work, the work is repeatative. The people are good for the most part and the pay can't be grumbled at. 6AM train start, getting home around 8PM. But I'm wondering whether to make a change. Im just not challenged and I don't want to get up in the mornings. I read some where that if you don't want to get up you're in the wrong job...Was wondering if anyone could offer some advice to a vague conceptual post. Been looking at a number of different job postings but nothing seems a lot different. I want variety and challenge, doesn't have to be consultancy but sitting in the same office for the next 10 years might kill me.Thanks for reading, any help, questions or clarifications you can offer would be great. Thanks, Idris

Hi Idris,If you aren't fundamentally set on staying within consulting it way be worth having a look at escthecity.com, it was a job site setup by some ex EY consultants (at least I think ex EY) as a job website for people who had worked in "city" jobs, banking, consulting etc who were looking for more rewarding jobs which still used their skillsets. Can't hurt to have an idea of what else might be out thereMay help with that get out of bed in the morning feeling!

Anon MCs
08.07.12 00:00

Hi Idris13I worked in industry for x number of years in project programme management and then made a move to consulting for x years.I finally handed in my notice from one of well respected MCs and a month ago finished my notice period. Ended on a Friday and started a contracting role on the Tuesday (gave myself Monday as a holiday!)Best decision EVER. Not only do I now get to run my own Limited Company (which I am planning to grow with my little brother who is thinking of going into recruitment) but also am working on a major programme for one of the big banks.I was slaving away for an MC doing your hours and more, now I wake up and can't wait to go to work. I come home, pick up my gf in the air, tell her how much I love her and loving life. Do not get stuck in a rut, but be sensible (ie I handed in my notice once I secured my first contract) and find what YOU truly believe will make you happy.Contracting and having my own company is what completed me (alongside a strong and beatiful woman I met while working for an MC, so have no bones to pick with them), but the MC environment wasn't for me, I did not look at the partners and think "oh yes, thats what I want out of life". Look at your Partners or senior managers, do they represent what you want in the future? If not, then find out what it is and go for it.Its a terrible job market out there, but I did it and if I can do it, no doubt all the others out there can too.Best of luck.

Thanks for posting Anon MCsSounds like you have had a good escape. Starting a business is something I'd like to do but not really sure I have the skills or more importantly an idea about what business to open at the moment.I think I'm looking for one of Those unadvertised jobs... Not really sure what though - it's been a long day....Any other thoughts from people...ThanksIdris13
