Hi, I am a CFA charterholder with work experience in financial markets. I'd like to know if the CFA is appreciated in strategy consulting? Cheers

CFA is useful in investment consulting, the likes of Mercer, Towers Watson, Aon Hewitt. Mercer has a Financial Strategy Group that you can look into.Oliver Wyman has a separate financial services practice which is different from their general consulting practice.Other option is look at economic consultancies CRAI, FTI, etc. depends on what experience you have. If for example you have been in a front office role with CFA you can also find strategy roles in Big 4 too.

Hey,Two answers:(1) In general, I'm afraid not. As part of annual recruitment for Analyst/Associate positions it would be a "nice to have" - might give you the edge at CV stage over someone who is otherwise equally qualified, but very unlikely to command a pay premium or role boost(2) For specific FS-focused consultancies (e.g. Oliver Wyman?) or for firms looking to provide a very specific expertise for which they foresee a need in their pipeline (e.g. an MBB hiring an Engagement Manager for long running financial services work) it might have a big impact. But don't be blind about this, anyone seeking a CFA does not exactly intend to let you get experience across non-FS practices...Does that answer the question?

Hi Yes Thanks. I understant it's a plus but not a big plus. In banking it's highly valued because it proves your skills but shows also that you've struggled to get it.You last answer means that if the CFA is of interest to a consulting firm they'll then have in mind to make me work in FS assignements?

Anon66 is right. I didn't spell it out very clearly. You could get into strategy consulting as specialist hire (FS).I know former investment bankers who have moved into consulting in financial services. Have you thought about Private Equity? That may be more useful/interesting considering your background.

I've got an experience in sales trading actually. Private equity is too competitive and I believe the probability to join a fund for a profile like mine (4.5 years of experience) is very low.I guess that if a strategy firm interviews a CFA, they'll bomb him with finance questions, don't you think?

Strategy consulting interviews may choose to drag you out of your comfort zone, therefore the focus could be less formulae and more everything else.
