I've 11 years of post MBA experience. I started with a technology company in HR and moved tothe Higher Education sector. I spent most of career leading diverse commercial project teams at the univeristy. I am interested in moving to a career in consulting but not sure where to start. Can someone help me to find out if my kind of profile fit for consulting and how to kick start my way forward?

Consulting firms don't tend to hire at your level of experience - not without some past experience as a consultant, in general. Or without some superstar, niche experience.I wouldn't want to be negative about this but I think you'll find it difficult to get in - you're too experienced and will be seen as lacking basic consulting skills + set in your ways / difficult to mold at this point. I'm not saying this is right, but that will most likely be the view.

I agree. You'll be seen as a baggy trousered, leather-patches-on-your-tweed-jacket, striking left-winger for entry into the Private Sector. However your public sector knowledge could be a god-send to those firms struggling to appreciate why their client counterparts disappear at 4pm, 5 months of the year - and don't even come in the other 7. You actually don't mention what sort of Consulting you want to do? It's a broad brush we paint with. Which bristle are you?

Thanks for the input. This is straight, but very helpful. I am open to get more information before I jump into it. When I finished my MBA 10 years ago, I had this inclination to start my career in consulting. Now after many years, I am again figuring out if this is a possibility. If this is a impossible pursuit, I might just decide to stay where I am right now.

Oh!! I have this public sector paint all over me!!! I am open to start anywhere, full service, boutique or strategy even at the junior most level. I agree with you in saying that the firms may not find my profile interesting enough to recruit. Do I stand any chance to start at the junior level???

You will not be hired at a junior/grad level. Again, will be seen as coming in with too much baggage / without the naive excitement of a real fresh graduate.
