I'm a graduate who had just finished university in July. I was lucky enough to grab myself a job as desktop technical support at a well known multinational banking solution company. I did a degree in Info system and achieved a 2:2. I'm looking to stay at my current place for a year or 2 for the experience as I had none prior to this job, which I was lucky to get.I wanted to try an move into IT consultancy with Accenture or Deloitte. Do you think this would be possible?

Very busy, but in one word, no chance at all.Sorry, don't mean to be rude - I'm sure others will elaborate.

They don't teach us to count at Deloitte though - that was 4 words.

Sadly your degree grad will not get you past the filter stage. If you really want to get into consulting wait a few years until you have built up a deep expertise in a particular area that is of worth to consulting. However by then you may be earning more than you would as a new consultant so the move may not look so attractive.

Thanks for the reply as harsh as it sounds. What about moving into technical consulting within my company

You may be able to get into Accenture's Tech Solutions arm - I don't know the entry requirements, but you'd probably need to work your way up to something more develop-ey than tech support at your current employer first.Btw, Solutions is not consulting, and Deloitte is out of the question. If you do swing it into ACN solutions, you may then again be able to swing into consulting (v rare but happens), or at the very least end up doing work that's similar to their IT consultants in the long run.

This is like wanting to play premiership football and getting a job playing professional rugby. You can either focus on the job at hand , excel and perhaps one day play international rugby (which may well lead to other things), or you can twist and distort all your effort into one day moving into being third choice goalkeeper at a part-time non-league outfit.Don’t let the “glamour” of consultancy outshine the perfectly good careers to be had elsewhere. Be great, learn the business, start your own firm, make millions, then sit back and hire consultants whenever you wish (which believe me if you’re a self-made millionaire will be pretty much never, cos you’ll by then realise what a waste of space and money most of them are).
