How do consultants keep fit when working 15 hours/day? No time for jogging, gym, etc.?

Oli High Intensity Training in the gym is good if you are time strapped. Should take no more than 30 - 45 mins max for a workout, 3 times a week.

Most consultants do not work 15 hour days - it's a myth. Most of the time it 830-600 low intensity (fill in a boring status report, attend a poorly thought through and pointless meeting which has no purpose and is used by some ego-impulsive client or partner to pontificate). The rest of the day is tidying up or 'rehashing' old ppt decks and basically pressing Ctrl C and Ctrl V a lot of times.Trust me the work is easy, the intensity is low and the hours are ok. Don't beleive the hype.If you don't beleive have a look at a consultant's wage and compare to someone in industry...notice so close they are. The allure of consulting being stimulating, interesting is wearing increasingly thin.ZB

in the course of a day aim to do 100 genuflections to your client and/or partner - this will not only work your quads but advance your career

Go with mars a day - H.I.T is the way forward. It can be done even quicker and 10-15 min daily maintains fitness with minimal, or no kit. Getting fit, or improving fitness does require more effort so can be done @ weekends or in easier times.See www.100repchallenge.com, or crossfit.com

I used to excuse myself from office and hit the gym or go jogging and then I'd come back to work. I knew lot of people who did the same. I sometimes omitted taking shower after gym and loved the look on my boss's face - you know, you can smell something, but you don't wanna say anything. Of course, I'd leave to go to home much earlier on those nights. :)

Simples. Take some running kit into work. On the way home get off a station or two early and run the rest of the way home. Things is, you have to build exercise and fitness into your daily routine, it takes some imagination and will power sometmes but it can be done. It is not unusual to find me doing heavy dumb-bell (17.5 kg each) work in my garage at 9 or 10 in the evening before bed. Who needs gyms?

I’m with muscleman (so to speak). If you live out of town, running from the client to a mainline station can be just as fast, free and far more pleasant than public transport. None of those nasty chemicals you find in tube stations these days. Can be slightly less enjoyable for those next to you on the train home, though…

What about for those of us who want to build muscle and get strong rather than smash our knees to pieces and get even skinnier by running to and from train stations in our suits?

Then you need HIT and a protein loaded diet, regular meals every 4 hours. If thats difficult use a good quality protein shake, ideally an all in one like cyclone which includes your creatine and the mineral compounds you need. Under the HIT system you are doing a set, add weight, no rest, next set until failiure. Aim to use a weight on which you fail at 6 - 8 reps. If working out at home use dumbells not a bar, and dont forget the dumbbell flys which work your chest far harder than press alone.

Hello peeps. Just finished a very half hour intensive dumb-bell session (incl. flies as Mars rightly suggests). Had a day off exercise yesterday but after a really trying day in the office on Monday I got off the Tube at Archway and ran to my home on the edge of North London / Herts. By the time I got home an hour and twenty minutes or so later, the day was forgotten and I slept like a log...try it!

Muscleman, what did you do with your suit and in particular the suit jacket? Crumple it up and put it in a rucksack or something?

I used to keep jogging outfit in my office. I'd change into it, go for a run and change back into my office clothes when I'd come back to office. If I used to go to the gym, I'd do the same. On some days when I would walk home (about an hour walk), I'd leave my office clothes at work and walk home in my jogging outfit. It can be done if you have the right kind of attitude.

it shouldn't, but in practice does seem to get more difficult/'acceptable' to take the aerobic route into the office the further you progress into senior grades...

Dave, Alex has provided the answer. Just keep a suit and spare shirt somehwere in the office. Granted, this is not always easy on client premises. I am lucky because I have access to a shower room at work too so I can run in if I want to, but I'm not really a morning exerciser. That said, come Monday and the RMT strike I'll be running in I hope.
