I am currently working within the Banking sector and I want to get out and get into a consultancy firm. I have 8 years banking experience with 2.5 years project experience. I have PRINCE2 and ISTQB certified tester foundation and am working towards my BCS BA foundation certificate. Will I have enough experience to get into a consultancy firm and get a role at senior consultant level?

I would say yes. The rule of thumb is that non-consulting experience is halved which in your case would mean 4 years of equivalent consulting experience which lands you in the upper half of senior consultant level.Definitely don't undersell yourself as in a lot of consulting firms, HR has a tendency to lowball candidates.

Star23, have you worked with consultans from known firms?Have you tried talking to them? It could be your best bet.If you never had exposure to consultants doign work with banks, not only could this put you at a disadvantage when applying for consulting jobs, but it could also mean you don't have a good understanding of what you'll be doing should you land the job as a consultant eventually.

Star,Please please have a long review of various threads of this Forum on "Consultancy vs Industry" or "MC vs Industry". Doing a search on these will give you a few eye openers. If thereafter you are still interested (and in this I include you talking to a Management Consultant in Banking that you must know) then;I think you should be able to sell yourself as a Senior Consultant. Mars (someone else from this forum) can advise better but SC seems about right for you.One thing that is missing is your performance - are you a high performer? Do you have consistently high performance grades behind you? Have you got strong examples of you leading / managing big benefits for your business area? This will help you understand at what level you can sell yourself at.Good luck on whatever you decide to do, market is good at the moment.

Star23Definitely in my opinion, the consultancy that I work for have taken on a few candidates recently with your background. I think your skillset suits a move to consultancy if that's the direction you would like to head.Feel free to drop me an email if you would like to discuss, happy to give some impartial advicecareerconsult9@hotmail.com

I see no reason why not. To enter at SC level you'll want to position yourself as Manager material (they will invariably see you one grade below where you position yourself) so demonstrating some key points around managing budget, any direct reports etc. Basically on top of your industry knowledge and technical skills (the consultant bit), demonstrate the 'management' bit.Goes without saying to target those MCs who have a strong banking sector presence.
