I am wondering if anyone out there has ever met or worked with a doctor who has thrown in the stethascope and moved into management consultancy?? Well i am one and am hoping to do so... Specifically, i am interested in whether any firms will hire as-is and undertake some intial training or if I would have to do an MBA etc?? I have taken finace papers to 3rd year in my first bachelor degree and managed to do very well in them. I honestly think this is more my line work after 5 years in the NZ, Auz, UK hospital system.... And I am keen. Many thanks, L

One of my friend is a doctor and is currently doing his MBA from LBS. According to him, doctors are highly sought-after professionals by management consultancies, especially the ones that have got the NHS project and also the ones that are involved in pharma/life-sciences/biotech practise areas.

I agree, somewhere like LEK, McKinsey, BCG, Navigant all have big life science practices and like to have medics/scientists on board as you probably will have a better understanding of the issues/projects your working on for the companies you consult to than any accountant would.

I am a doctor doing an MBA, and I would agree that MC firms like doctors. If you go to a top school and prepare properly then you will get a job at a top firm.Without an MBA it is possible but it will be much harder to get interviews as you are not really in the system. It will also be much harder to do well in case studies as they will be brand new and unfamiliar and you will be directly competing with MBA students that have had hours and hours of practice and coaching.McKinsey do hire doctors without MBAs, and train them with a 'mini-MBA' for 4 weeks or so. The bar however is set very high.
