Dear all,I have in my career been in a couple of situations where a whole department has been made redundant; plus a move (of my choice) from the North of England to London, the net result is 8 employers in a career of 16 years so far... Current job title is Manager, previous was Senior Consultant, by the way...Does an average 'tenure' of two years per role matter? They are, by and large, blue chip companies. If attitudes have been slowly changing (my father worked >30 years for one employer), how much does it now matter? And if one's CV is a bit bitty, can one mitigate this?A little heavy for a Friday afternoon, but any thoughts appreciated, particularly by those involved in hiring...

Just found this from 'marsday' , posted 15th MayAfter that, in the UK/EU market you will be wanting to move every 3 - 5 years or 2 promotions whichever comes quicker.

Every 2 years is choppy. It's not bad if hidden amongst longer term roles. e.g. 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, 2 years etc.Even if you have a valid excuse for each one, it'll still be seen as choppy - there's no 2 ways about it. The main thing is whether the hiring manager see's enough in your skills to warrant what they perceive to be taking a risk.

Just be honest with your reasons. No shame in redundancy these days. Just make it clear it was you AND a whole bunch of others that got made redundant.

The only caveat is that when you've been made redundant more than once, it could be the wrong place, at the wrong time. However, it can set alarm bells ringing...

It's a bit choppy, but we are in the world of portfolio careers now, so what would have been unacceptable is now just a little undesirable. The reasons for the changes, right now, are less important that how you wrap the whole thing up. What you need to convey is resilience to changes (and redundancy does provide that example) and some sense of design - show how you have continued to follow a trajectory and made adjustments to this to accommodate factors outside your control.

Thanks guys - some re-assurance, but I'm not kidding myself, it does look as if I'll need a sympathetic or enlightened recruiter

Hey!18 months ago I had an interview with Accenture. The HR guy goes..."I'm hesitant to put you through to the next round because you have been in 4 different roles in 3 large companies, all in the space of 3.5 years".I literally didn't know how to respond to that! I couldn't say that I get bored easily...

The presentation and content of your CV can make or break your application. Employers make a very quick judgement about whether or not you are a candidate worth approaching, and your CV is your shop window. Having gaps in your employment history doesn't have to be a negative as long as it's well framed in the context of a growing career. You might want to consider a professional cv writing service:http://www.glenislasolutions.co.uk/cv-and-employment-service/professional-cv-writing-service
