So I graduated with my master's in mechanical engineering in the summer of 2014. I had a rough job search so I ended up working at a small HVAC engineering consulting firm in Boston for 1.5 years. I made the switch to a larger firm (from 10 employees to 100) in January. I'm now working in one of the biggest and oldest MEP firms in the Boston area...and I think I've officially fallen out of love with engineering.I'm considering transitioning to consulting because I feel like even with only 2.5 years of engineering work experience (I don't even have my PE yet) I'm already topping out as far as what I'm going to see, particularly with my specific responsibility of energy modeling and LEED documentation. In other words, I'm already getting bored out of my mind with engineering. The question I have is how should I go about making the switch? I'm not sure I want to go ahead and apply to business school just yet, even though I have a rock solid GMAT score (740), because I feel like with 2.5 years work experience at firms that are well-known in the Boston HVAC industry, but almost certainly unknown to a b-school admissions officer, makes my application very uncompetitive to my target schools. In the meantime, has anyone made a switch from something technical like MEP engineering to consulting? I'm aware, given my background, I'm very business illiterate, but I hope that my GMAT score helps add credibility when I give applying to a consulting firm a shot.
