Could anybody reccomend any part time / distant learning courses?For example is the open university MBA any good. Is it worth while or is there no point unless I do it properly and fulltime.Would you reccomend any other management, strategy, leadership training. I currently have 7 years telecoms eperience with 4 of line management / project managment.

The Open University MBA is a good degree just like most others but..If you want an MBA to prople your career it is a different conversation. An MBA done in isolation is about the qualification not the learning and it is not likley to elevate you to professional services and blue chip firms. For them the MBA is an additional quality and they are looking for all round skills. The modular approach with a university or business choll would proabably be a better choice and the experiences of working with a peer group is more likely to help devlop yopur career in the longer term. I am thinking alumni etc

I agree (mostly) with John Smith.I finished an OU MBA in 2000 and found the materials excellent - books, tapes, videos etc (these were all included in the fees).The tutors - mostly self-employed consultants with pretty good CVs - were fine, some better than others as you'd expect. In the 1st year, they were the most patronising people I'd ever met.In terms of networking, it was pretty odd. On the one hand there were people from consultancies and other orgs as I expected - mostly paying their own way, so taking a relatively cheap option. However, there were many people I didn't expect to see - GPs, lots of Armed Forces people, politicians and faith healers, psychologists, air line pilots, marketers, etc.This immeasurably added to the experience itself but was of less use in forming alliances and useful networks. On the plus side, I have met a lot of public sector people since who have been through it and when they are buying, they rate it highly.Would I make the same decision again? If I had the time and money, I think the big name, full time, 1-year course would be my choice. A former colleague was at Cranford and the network and camaraderie etc sounds excellent.Final note: my salary has increased by 260% since getting the MBA.Good luckD

What about something like the part time distant learning offerings of Warwick and Manchester business Schools. Are these a good compromise?

I am now a change management / cultrure change consultant. Before the MBA I was a civil servant for 10 years and have subsequently changed employer 4 times. A mate at BT tells me that moving on is the best way of getting pay rises. He''s been there 15 years, getting occasional increments.D
