A colleague has moved from industry to the green dot. They had been informed that they were promotion ready and that they were being brought in on a grade lower i.e. Consultant as opposed to Senior Consultant. A common practice as we know. But what does promotion mean really? I think the top end scale of Consultant is about 46k and then senior starts at 50k. Is this correct? Any feedback welcomed guys.

There are Consultants getting higher than that, but don't forget SCs get a car allowance on top...

Consultant goes to around £49k, plus £600, which is non-pensionable and can be spent on 'benefits' or just added to the salary.Senior Consultant starts at £50k, plus £5,100. Bonuses are also slightly better.Promotions at Deloitte happen on 1 Sept after the performance year of June-May. Therefore, if your friend has just joined as a Consultant, their first promotion opportunity to SC is Sept 14, at which point their salary would increase around £9k.

...and 'promotion ready' doesn't mean anything, other than that they couldn't fully convince that they should be SC level during the interview stages and accepted the offer Deloitte made. I doubt Deloitte actually used the term.At least they have a full year to prove themselves for the promotion.

It really is amazing that they get away with bringing people in on lower grades all the time and people accept it. I guess though they are making sure they set you up for success rather than failure as a lower grade does ease you in to the culture better. However a lot of people seem to get low balled (especially coming from industry) and told to take it or leave it. Probably explains why some people do take it and then leave after 1-2 years.
