Got my undergrad from Krannert School of Business at Purdue. During my time in Undergrad I played poker part time and paid for school and bills and such. So i did very well, but i don't like the ups and downs that come with it, a steady paycheck sounds much nicer. I'm looking into a career in consulting, at this point im holding down as a personal banker while working my way through a night MBA courses at Purdue Calumet, a satellite purdue campus.Any advice for a road into the consulting world? Thanks

Why are you taking an MBA with no commercial experience? And don't you get a steady paycheck as a personal banker?

Ill be honest, personal banking is awful. I am getting my MBA to move up faster. And yea its steady, but not great pay. I am more interested in consulting and figured an MBA would help.so, any tips on breaking into a consulting job?

As far as I am aware Pursdue isn't a target school so you are going to struggle. An MBA won't move you up faster unless it's supported by experience - so you are just racking up debt for little guaranteed reward.I'll be blunt.Frankly I don't think consulting is a realistic option - you certainly don't come across as having the commitment to get into consulting let alone persevere in such a competitive environment, and your motivation of a 'steady paycheck' is so weak it's ludicrous. You may still be able to apply on grad schemes - depending on how long you have been working - but I really don't rate your chances.

Gamblers do well in investment bank trading. I have met traders who openly say they used to gamble before becoming traders.I'm afraid gambling is not looked upon favorably in consulting.

Oh, I don't know that gambling isn't look upon favourably. I know a few consultants who enjoy the occasional game of poker. If I interviewed someone and they claimed to have played a mixed odds and skill game like poker well, then I would very much view it as a positive thing because it means that they probably have a grasp of probability and statistics. If, on the other hand, after I'd whipped out a deck of cards and we'd played a couple of hands it became clear that they didn't have a clue what they were doing then it would definitely be a negative. That said, if they said that they played baccarat, roulette or just about any other casino game then I'd probably reject them out of hand for failing to grasp basic probability.EC
