Accenture vs. Boutique

I am graduating in May and am weighing an offer from a small boutique firm vs. a potential offer from Accenture (I'm not going to have much time to decide after Accenture gets back to me so I'm trying to figure it out ahead of time). I got the impression that the boutique has a great work environment. Everybody seemed to know each other, including analysts and managers. They recruit people from top schools and have some alumni in good MBA programs. However, they don't have the brand name that Accenture does. Will Accenture's brand name make a big difference in getting into MBA programs? Does Accenture's work environment suck? I have heard mixed reviews. Also, I am interviewing for Systems Integration at Accenture. I'm not super interested in IT, but everybody keeps telling me that it would be easy to get management experience there or even switch tracks. Is this actually true or are they sugarcoating? Finally, my long term goal is to do international development. The boutique does a little bit of pro bono work which is good, but Accenture actually has development programs. Either way I will probably be going to go back to school. Would either firm be better for this goal?Sorry, lots of questions. If anybody can answer any of them I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

You may find the following article helps - it's not Accenture-specific but does address the trade-offs in choosing between a major brand firm and a boutique. Hope it helps:http://news.top-consultant.com/UK/Big-firms-vs.-small-firms-8134.htmlTony RestellTop-Consultant.com

"Also, I am interviewing for Systems Integration at Accenture. Is this actually true or are they sugarcoating?"(Team/project) management experience, definitely - and at quite a high level, with a very sharp trajectory. OTOH, if you end up like 98% of people in ACN SI, you will not be doing management consulting. You will definitely not switch tracks. Everybody wants to switch to proper mgmt consulting at ACN, very very few ever do.That's not to say it can't be done, but you have to be very lucky, on the right project, at the right time, etc. That's not to say ACN SI is a bad place. If PM is what you're interested in, probably an excellent place.

@Baykus: Thank you this is very helpful. Do you know if SI is more like pure IT consulting or is there a pretty strong strategy component? They kept telling me it was very similar to MC proper, but I think they could tell I was interested in MC so I was a bit skeptical. The other thing they told me was that I could do more management consulting oriented work without switching tracks if I worked to get cast in those kind of roles. Is this true? Thank you very much for your responses. The article was also very helpful.

There's pretty much no strategy in SI work. While I'm sure proper IT strat does get done from time to time, as a % of hours, I'd guess it's less than 1% in SI. There was a group called SITE that did IT strategy, but that's gone. And of course, non-IT strat will be done by the proper strat group, which does not sit in SI. Regardless, you would need to sit in the SI IT strat group (if it still exists) to get those roles. While there is fluid movement between techie positions, none of my peers who were in SI ever got strat roles. The vast majority of careers in ACN SI start with hands on IT/PMO/process mapping for a couple of years, then move on to project management. You can guide your career to more management consulting roles, but you will need to push for it, and honestly it will rely on being lucky with roles, network etc.I'm not saying this to denigrate ACN. I was in SI, and did manage to move to a more management consulting set of roles, while getting a solid technical grounding before I moved on. I was lucky and took chances. I now work in pure mgmt consulting, and can safely say that >95% of what I saw during my years there was not mgmt consulting.ACN SI is what the name suggests - systems integration, building / installing large software systems, etc. It's a great place to be in many ways, and among the very best at what it does. It is not, however, management consulting.
