maybe one for Mr Cool... can anyone give a thumbnail sketch of how mid to senior grades compare across some of the IBs - DB, Barclays, UBS all have MD and Director grades, plus ED at UBS, but they don't seem to tally one for one - eg does Director at Barclays span D/ED at UBS, is MD easier to make at one rather than another? thanks..

The majority of US Banks have the following:-VP and then maybe SVPD or EDMDWithin Middle Office/Operations, Finance and Technology SVPs and Directors generally have to build up a large team around them and take on at least a couple of different product areas in a line role or a global remit to make MD grade - Obviously you'll need a sponsor from the FO as well. Problem is unless you've got the high level of product knowledge you're not generally going to shine in the line role. The majority of consultants going into IB will be put straight into a CTB type role where you'll generally be moved around a lot and most likely get stuck at Director for a long time/life. With regards to the european banks they all have very different titles - all generally following the same pattern as the US bank but with a different name. RBS, DB and Barcap the same as the above but UBS have a D level for VP'sHope that helps a bit

thanks, but what I'm after is the relative equivalence of the grade I mentioned in those specific banks - I'm getting approaches which I'm finding hard to position. for example, is there a smaller relative population of MDs at DB than at Barclays, does Barclays Director grade cover both D and ED at UBS or does it cover ED and lower MD, that kind of thing...

Sorry, ok with the likes of DB and Barcap - fairly similar size maybe DB has the slight edge from a headcount perspective in London and MD level positions as they are large across all products. An ED at UBS would be a SVP and junior Director at Barcap, and then a Director at UBS would be exactly the same as Director anywhere. They have 3 levels of Director at UBS - the associate directors are VPs. Does the person approaching you know what your current level is? - I take it you're at least a Director in one of the Big 4 if you're considering these levels within IB?

Would check that - my understanding is that associate director at UBS is the equivalent of AVP elsewhere and that their "director" grade is equivalent to VP.

Director at UBS is well below what I'm interested in - confusion is that DB and Barclays appear to use that title up to a more senior point - think it goes straight from D to MD.
