I'm currently working with a small team of MBB analysts who are preparing a budget submission. we had a conference call on Friday about lunchtime, then they worked half if Saturday and all if Sunday to do the next version. I had a barbecue and played golf, then had a look at their work this morning.Cheered me up....

I remember those days. Sat in an air-conditioned office underneath fluorescent lighting all day on a blazing hot Saturday wearing a suit and tie while my friends were in t-shirts and shorts chilling on a recliner in their gardens with a beer in one hand and a burger in the other. I didn't last long in that environment. But - why do people do it??

Very true. I had never been so miserable than in my early career working crazy hours on pointless stuff while wishing I was instead the team secretary, able to go home at 5 and enjoy the sunshine. To this day, I see people working for banks and the like and I think to myself, "they'd have to pay me a darn sight more than £1M a year or whatever the going rate is these days to keep me in that building for most of my life". The thing is, while you're raking in the cash, life passes you by.

Makes the weekend working a minor inconvenience for such a large perk.

"MB who??"[/quote]A little while back I was at a wedding, two close friends of my girlfriend were getting married and because they were not from my circle of friends I did not know many people who were attending. As I was introducing myself to the group, a teacher (so you expect a reasonable level of intelligence) asked what I do for a living. I should point out I was not trying to pull this lady and had no real desire to impress her and I was with my partner anyway. I told her what I do for a living... "I manage x, I deliver y, I oversee z" etc... I told her the company and client I worked for, she'd heard of neither and we had roughly a 5 minute chat about work, it was very nice conversation.Later that night she introduced me to another of her friend who was interested in the sector I work in - I'm not sure why it's very boring."Hello again", she said... "This is John, I've brought him over because I thought you might be able to help him get a job". I thought to myself this is a little bit strange but let her talk anyway... "John works in Financial Services and as you're a recruitment consultant I thought you could have a chat"...So, folks, there you go. I had a 5 minute chat about what I do for a living... all this person heard was the word 'consultant' and slapped the word recruitment in front of it.How do you explain what you do to others, without sending them to sleep?

I went out with a girl once who was a director in a marketing agency. My gran asked what she did - I said she works in marketing. Later I met my aunt and she said - oh I believe your new GF works on the market - what does she sell ? (she meant the type with stalls selling veg etc). DC

My dad, a straight up Scottish blue collar truck driver / factory supervisor, last week, introduced me as "One of those suit guys that comes in to look at stuff and get other guys fired." HahaHe then rounded off by saying "But he earns far more than we ever will boys." I had to buy the next round after that.
