Hey!I have been working in the financial service industry over the last years and currently seeking a new role inside consultancy...I got two job offers:1. Consultant at MBB2. Manager at one of the BIG 4.It's very hard for me to choose. What would you do? Any recommendations?Thanks a lot!

Consultant MBB for sure. You should easily be able to go to Big 4 after if you wanted after your time at MBB.

Hi GG,On average, the one that will give you the most future options / open doors is MBB. By far.No matter what we have written on this forum previously re the MBB quality of work etc being same as others, having MBB on your CV can be of huge benefit in your future career. My colleagues daughter worked at MBB for just under 10 years. When she decided she had enough (due to workloads and no life outside work), she was pretty much able to pick and choose from various offers she got. I mean quite a few and they were well paid strat roles in various institutions.That is the power of doing well at MBB and deciding to move on thereafter. Like most things in life, it does not "guarantee" anything, but if you are good etc then it will help you immensely when it comes to your next move. Best of luck and well done. One warning though - if you join MBB, be prepared to work extremely hard for very long hours. Nonetheless, the benefits to CV, experience you will get and future options are very very good. As they say, the only place where success comes before work is the dictionary!

Depends, can you afford the insurance and petrol costs for the Veyron? ;-) Out of interest what's the salary difference between the offers?

Another thing you that a lot of people do, is sign up for a half-day conference in Oxford about strategy or somesuch guff, then put on your CV under the qualifications section "ABC High School, XYZ College, Oxford University - Strategic Management". I have seen this done many a time. When that happens, I'm half tempted to call them in for an interview and use them as interviewing practice for the juniors.

The Bugatti wont be thrilling because you'll never get out of 1st gear on UK roads :) The Bugatti might get you laid more though.

How many more doors does this actually open for you? I don't know anyone who works for MBB, but the guys I do know at Can, Del, PWC, EY all seem to do very well for themselves as and when they move into industry. Genuinely curious...

Enagement Manager at MBB would move on to become Directory of Strategy at a F500 (F100?). Where would the Manager/Senior Mangager from Accenture/Big4 end up with ?Also, McKinsey is "The CEO Factory". How many F500 CEOs emerged out of Big4/Accenture Also BCG/Bain CEO numbers are not impressive. Deloitte scores here though (next only to McKinsey)Would love to hear your thoughts :)

If I had a chance at MBB, I'm sure I would take it - I just couldn't resist a chance to see if I could survive in the big leagues.

I don't know how an engagement manager from MBB maps to the levels of my present company (Accenture), I'll assume senior manager...I know of SM's where I work who moved into industry as heads of xx. Does being a magical engagement manager at MBB guarantee you a director of strategy job? I suspect not. I'm sure more CEO's do come from MBB, but they are the elite, not many will make it to their level, I was more thinking of a comparison with the masses.Not sure what the respective work-life balances are either. Assume it is worse at MBB, fewer places to hide.

Other companies may not differentiate. It is not black and whiteWrt CEOs, it is not working for McKinsey that increases your chances of becoming a CEO. It is the fact that you will most likely have excelled at every step of your life before and after McKinsey. McKinsey is just one of those steps, where you will learn some good stuff, make some useful contacts, and likely exit into a great job. But if you weren't CEO material pre-McKinsey you won't be CEO material post-McKinsey. As is the case for the top business schools, the recruitment process is selecting for people that already have 'CEO potential'Just my $0.02

Why would they not be considered? Seems a pretty idiotic view. The person should always be viewed on what they have delivered, not where they have worked.Great work is still great work outside of MBB. Unless your company is wanting an employee with MBB type contacts (which, lets face it, someone in a big 4 could also have), I see no reason to exclude someone on the basis of where they have worked.

MBB - its about how the metal is tested. That's what ultimately creates the CEO material. The rest is just a combination of politics and luck.

The person should always be viewed on what they have delivered, not where they have worked.[/quote]Let me rephrase - The 'strategy team' is staffed exclusively by MBB consultants and one or two from LEK, Roland Berger etc. Jobs are not advertised, they are 'handed down' to the next generation from those same firms. It is not that someone else couldn't do the work, it is just that they are not in the right place to find out about and apply for it. And so the status quo continuesIt's no different to the elite PE firms recruiting pretty much exclusively from Harvard and Stanford - there is no need to widen the net...

To give my opinion on the actual question:MBB for sure

Why are clients willing to pay 2/3x more for a MCK consultant than they are for a Big 4 one? Either whoever hires MBB is an idiot or, on average, we can assume that they deliver higher quality work and have a stronger background. While it is often hard to evaluate someone for what he/she has actually delivered, the firm you come from gives a strong indication on what to expect. It is the same logic that applies to MBAs coming from Stanford or Harvard, or did you think the reason they get all the good jobs is because they know how to solve case studies better than someone graduating from Warwick (no offense, I mentioned the first uni that came to mind)?
