Hi All,This is my first post :|A new joiner to a large IT consultancy where the organisation are pushing me in an 'IT advisory' role. Therefore I am not getting trained/qualified on specific technology (even advisory training) and would like people's opinions if this was a good or bad thing? Prior to joining the firm, I worked as a Business Analysis at a couple of large firms for around 2 years. My aim is to work within the company for about 2 years and then move to another consultancy as my company has a reputation for poor pay. Can you share your opinions / expertise if you feel that this is good / bad? My long term aims would be to climb to VP/Director level in a consultancy environment.Thanks,James.

Hi JamesFocussing on a single technology in my view wouldn't be best idea - IE how many VP's of Oracle Databases or Cisco Routers have you come across - except of course in Cisco or Oracle. My suggestion for specialising is to specialise in an idustry - ie Finance, Oil and Gas etc etc and learn technology solutions and uses for a particular industry - How many VP's have you come across Heading up an FS or Utility practice in a a technology consultancy such as Accenture, Capgemni etc ie VP for Public Sector probably came from the SAP/Oracle/BI practice in these orgs earlier in their careers. Obviously dealing with technology practices here not the management consulting practices which can be different Accenture/Capgemini ect.DC

Hey - Thank you very much and that certainly make sense. As mentioned before, My company is a large technology consultancy that does not compete well in terms of salary. I was looking to join a top 4 accountancy firm and wanted to know how long do people think I should work for my current company before transitioning to a similar role with another company? as maybe an experience consultant (as I am a junior consultant as we speak).Thanks,James.
